Siemens in China to achieve heavy rail production of new technologies for the first time in the world

Siemens Metallurgical Technology won a contract from Chinese steelmaker Baotou Steel (Group) Co Ltd to provide a new heavy rail on-line for one of two existing long product mills built by the company in Baotou, Inner Mongolia Heat treatment system. This will be the world's first application of an advanced orbital quenching technology jointly developed by Siemens and Centro Sviluppo Materiali SpA (CSM) of the Italian technology center. The rails produced with this dual-phase rail jet-hardened technology called Idrha + (Injector Dual-phase Rail Hardening) improve contact fatigue and wear resistance. The new online system also optimizes the performance of different grades of heavy rail products while being fast and flexible. The new line is expected to begin trial operation in early 2014.

Baotou Steel's annual output capacity of 2.1 million tons of long products. The Idrha + system will be installed on a rail rolling line capable of 400,000 t / y for the rolling of special steel rails of different sizes and shapes (including asymmetric profile rails) with a carbon content of 0.6 0.8 %. The system's maximum capacity is to produce 150 tons of steel per hour and up to 104 meters in length.

Developed jointly by Siemens and CSM, the Idrha + system is the first commercial application on rail rolling lines. It heat verified through pilot plant mechanical and metallurgical process model, to ensure that the final product reaches the Chinese standard rail in hardness, while increasing the contact fatigue properties and wear resistance. It can also simulate different cooling systems for different steel grades before starting production to shorten the production time, reach the rated capacity more quickly, and achieve the related performance parameters more stably and reliably.

Within the scope of China Baosteel's project, Siemens will be responsible for the design of the overall process technology, the vendor and the equipment supplied by the customer. Siemens' scope of supply includes an induction furnace, a highly flexible quenching line and a closed-loop process automation system. In addition, Siemens will also provide support for installation and commissioning. The project also includes the joint development of new rail grades with Baotou Iron and Steel and the recognition of the new steel grades in the international market.

The total production capacity of Baotou Steel in Inner Mongolia is 10 million tons per year. The company's products include cold rolled and hot rolled strip, slabs, seamless tubes, steel beams, bars and wires. Baotou Steel is one of the three major rail manufacturing bases in China. Siemens has implemented two modernization projects for the longs mill, installing a new cut and a new pinch roll in 1999 and four new racks and a centering system in 2005 And transform the temperature control system.
