Nissan Motor intends to sell lithium battery factories to find Chinese companies

According to foreign media reports, Nissan Motor is in contact with Panasonic and several Chinese companies to discuss the sale of its controlling stake in a lithium battery manufacturing joint venture.

The joint venture company named “Automotive Energy Supply Corporation” was jointly established by Nissan Motor Co. and NEC in 2007 and mainly produces lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles. Among them, Nissan Motor holds 51% shares, and NEC holds the remaining 49% of shares.

According to the "Nihon Keizai Shimbun" report, Nissan Motors plans to sell all its 51% stake. The reason is that Nissan Motors found that it is more economical to purchase batteries for its electric vehicles (including Leaf pure electric vehicles). In addition, Nissan Motor also plans to sell its own battery manufacturing business in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Currently, the lithium-ion battery market used by electric vehicles is highly competitive, and Panasonic is Tesla's lithium battery supplier. According to Tesla’s plan, the company’s annual automobile production in 2018 will increase to 500,000.
