Background

Recycled PET bottle flakes are produced from waste beverage bottles through sorting, crushing, washing, and drying processes. This makes it possible to produce recycled PET flakes wherever there is a consumption of beverages. As the main market for imported recycled PET bottle flakes, over 10-13 million tons of PET flakes are imported into China every year.

In 2017, environmental regulations in China became increasingly strict, leading to a complete ban on importing waste plastics, including recycled PET, in any form such as bales or flakes. Under these new regulations, recycled plastics can only be imported as granules or chips. Therefore, it has become essential for PET bottle flake recyclers to re-pelletize the flakes to meet the new import standards.

  • Adequate pre-drying time is essential before re-pelletizing. ACERETECH uses either a venting type compactor or a lifting-type drying hopper to remove moisture from the flakes, preventing hydrolysis during the re-pelletizing process;

  • Combining modular processing sections with a twin-screw extruder and an automatic three-stage root vacuum pump system ensures a vacuum pressure of up to -0.1MPa, effectively removing volatiles from the PET melt and minimizing IV value reduction;

  • Optimized process steps and specialized screw designs ensure efficient transformation of PET flakes from solid to liquid state, reducing the risk of yellowing caused by dead zones or localized overheating;
  • Strand pelletizing is a common method where strands from the extruder die are manually placed into a water trough for cooling, then dried using an air knife and cut into granules. This method is suitable for capacities below 600 kg/h but requires more labor and skilled operation;
  • For high-capacity PET pelletizing, an automatic underwater pelletizing system is necessary to ensure high throughput and automation performance.
