Japan has developed a special tire that can be charged from the road

On March 21, 2016, according to the AutoBlog website, researchers at the Toyohashi University of Technology in Japan have developed a method for charging an electric vehicle outside the vehicle. According to the Japan Times, in order to complete this work, electric vehicles equipped with special tires will receive energy directly from rails embedded in roads. However, this research is still in its early stages and the solution is not very practical.

The study hypothesized that when the car tire rolls, the steel wire inside it can get energy from the rails on the road and send it to the electric motor. The university has established a full-scale conceptual model on a 98-foot (about 30-meter) test field, and the electric vehicle can reach a speed of about 6 miles (about 9.65 kilometers). Prof. Takashi Ohira told reporters: “The acceleration process of the electric vehicle is very smooth and the driving experience is quite good”.

Professor Ohira has been working to reduce the dependence of electric vehicles on batteries over the past few years. In 2011, he proposed to embed RF transmitters on roads and use steel straps and special equipment installed on car tires to convert this signal into electrical energy. This test seems to be an extension of this study.

Although this method proved to be feasible, there are still many problems that need to be solved. For example, how much energy do you need to provide for thousands of cars on the road every day? At the same time, embedding the necessary equipment on the road will also be a huge task.

It is hard to imagine that we should invest so much money in such a huge infrastructure project, but this does not mean that Professor Ohira is the only one who aims to turn the road into a charging device. Volvo also tested inductive charging projects in the short track. Last year, Goodyear Tire also proposed to develop tires that can charge vehicles. HaloIPT Corporation and Korea Institute of Advanced Technology have also been studying this for many years.
