Solar panels blasted with "ion cannons"

Recently, Twin Creeks, a US company that is committed to researching solar and semiconductor ultra-thin wafer technology, revealed that they have developed a solar cell that is half the price of the cheapest product in the world. Even better, the Twin Creeks solar cell. It is made with a particle accelerator.

At present, almost all solar panels cut a large crystalline silicon block into 200 micron thick silicon wafers, plus electrode plates, packaged with a glass cover, and then placed in a place with the sun, through the photoelectric effect (When photons hit silicon, they excite electrons, produce electricity, and light energy is converted into electricity) to generate electricity. There are two major drawbacks to this method: just like the wood chips generated when cutting wood, when the crystalline silicon block is divided into 200 micron crystalline silicon wafers, it also produces "silicon wafers", which causes waste, and this waste is close. 50%; in addition, even if the thickness is less than 200 microns, the panel on the surface can work well, but the wafer is too thin to become brittle or even broken.

Therefore, Twin Creeks' particle accelerator, known as Hyperion's "Ion Cannon," came into being. Looking carefully at the picture, you can see that the 3 mm thick silicon wafer wraps the outer edge of the large spoke wheel. A particle accelerator emits hydrogen ions onto these silicon wafers. The voltage of the accelerator is strictly controlled, and hydrogen ions are emitted to collect it to a depth of 20 microns on the surface of the silicon wafer. The silicon wafers are transported by a robot into a furnace, and the hydrogen ions on the surface of the silicon wafer are heated to hydrogen in the furnace, thus separating the 20-micron-thick silicon layer. Use a metal substrate to make it non-fragile (you can see it from the right side of the figure below, it is easy to bend). The remaining silicon wafers can be used again by the particle accelerator to emit hydrogen ions. Turning the thickness to 1/10, which greatly reduces the waste of silicon, is the secret of Twin Creeks' ability to halve the cost of solar cells.

The "MIT Technology Review" magazine mentioned that although the technology of electron beam has been considered, the expensive price of particle accelerators has made commercial implementation prohibitive. Twin Creeks had to make its own particle accelerator, which is 10 times more powerful than the accelerators on the market today (100 mA 1 mega volt), which is a test of innovation.

All in all, if you buy Twin Creeks equipment, the cost per watt of solar cells is expected to be around 40 cents, which will be half the price of solar cells on the market (most solar cells are made in China). From this price point of view, it will seriously threaten the dominance of chemical energy batteries.
