The devastating 5.12 earthquake razed the original archives of the old prefectural city of Beichuan and buried more than 85,000 volumes of archives. After the national, provincial, and municipal archives departments fully rescued and excavated, after three emergency excavations, a total of 52,300 volumes of archives were rescued and transferred to the Ya'an Sichuan Provincial Archives School for more than four years of storage and restoration.

“After the archives are returned to the library, we will proceed with further sorting,” said Su Yide, director of the Beichuan County Archives Bureau. At present, the Beichuan archives rescue and restoration work has been basically completed, except for the fact that more than 3,000 volumes of archives have not yet been repaired. 90% of the damage files were renewed and the digitization was basically completed.
