Working fire in Chicago, 4-17-14
Yesterday night, I had the chance to witness an unusual incident. There's a small area that belongs to Chicago, located along Foster Avenue west of River Road, right next to O'Hare Field. Even though it's closer to Rosemont and Schiller Park, it's under the jurisdiction of the Chicago Fire Department (CFD). It’s not really a good call for either the airport companies or Engine 11 — more like a no-man's land. When smoke was reported in the area, multiple departments responded, including Rosemont, Schiller Park, Desplaines, and Park Ridge. The CFD was also notified.
Upon arrival, the units found a well-involved tour or party bus inside an industrial building. Park Ridge, which arrived on auto-aid, used a deck gun to tackle the main fire. Then, Chicago companies joined in, working alongside all the suburban units. One interesting detail was the use of MVU (924), a unit based at O'Hare Field. Most of us who follow firefighting closely have never seen this rig in action before. I even took a few photos of the street signs at each end of the block. They used suburban-style hydrants, but I think I heard the sprinkler connections on the building were Chicago threads.
It was definitely a rare event — something you don’t see every day.
