Every project is different, and sometimes that means thinking outside the box. At John S. Roberts J.H.S., we encountered a unique challenge involving steam coils. Instead of the typical horizontal mounting, these coils were installed vertically with a horizontal airflow. This design was specifically chosen to manage condensate buildup effectively.

Once steam condenses into liquid, it needs to exit the system. If left inside the coil, the water can freeze—expanding and potentially causing the coils to rupture. That’s why proper drainage is so important.

In this setup, one of the key considerations was ensuring the return header was pitched downward. This allowed gravity to assist in draining the condensate naturally, even when the system wasn’t operating at full pressure.

While full steam pressure can often push condensate out on its own, systems running at lower loads or reduced pressure may require this pitched header to ensure proper drainage. It's a small but critical detail that makes all the difference in performance and longevity.
