In 2023, Flyability introduced the first specialized payload for its modular Elios 3 drone: the RAD. This innovative addition was developed in partnership with Mirion Technologies, a global leader in radiation detection, measurement, and monitoring solutions. The Elios 3 RAD enables operators to detect, locate, and measure radiation levels from a safe distance, making it an essential tool for nuclear safety and environmental protection.

Later that year, Flyability and its partner Foretec participated in the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris, France, which ran from November 28 to 30. With over 20,000 attendees, the event brought together experts focused on addressing the challenges of working with nuclear materials, from energy production to environmental safety.
Among the many groundbreaking projects presented, the Elios 3 RAD stood out and was honored with the Nuclear Safety Innovation Award. The award, given by a panel of five judges, recognizes innovations that enhance or maintain the integrity of systems handling radioactive material. It highlights solutions that go beyond traditional nuclear sites, including applications in logistics, manufacturing, and nuclear waste management.
The Elios 3 RAD has already made a significant impact globally. It has been used to inspect an irradiated vault for the U.S. Department of Energy and is currently being tested at Sellafield, the UK’s largest nuclear waste management site. With more than 80% of U.S. nuclear power plants now equipped with Elios drones, the RAD is becoming a vital component of safer operations and more efficient data collection.
