In 2023, Flyability introduced a groundbreaking addition to its modular Elios 3 drone: the RAD payload. Developed in partnership with Mirion Technologies, a global leader in radiation detection and monitoring, the Elios 3 RAD is designed to help operators detect, locate, and measure radiation from a safe distance. Later that year, Flyability and its partner Foretec participated in the World Nuclear Exhibition in Paris, France, which ran from November 28 to 30. The event attracted over 20,000 attendees focused on addressing the challenges of working with nuclear materials. Among the many innovative projects presented, the Elios 3 RAD was recognized with the Nuclear Safety Innovation Award by a panel of five judges.
This award highlights solutions that contribute to the safety and integrity of systems involving radioactive materials, protecting both people and the environment. The Elios 3 RAD was acknowledged not only for its use in nuclear facilities but also for its potential in logistics, manufacturing, and waste management sectors.
The Elios 3 RAD has already made an impact globally. It has been used to inspect irradiated vaults for the U.S. Department of Energy and is currently being tested at Sellafield, the UK’s largest nuclear waste site. With more than 80% of U.S. nuclear power plants now equipped with an Elios drone, the RAD payload is becoming a critical component in enhancing safety and data collection processes.
