Mayor Richard Daley has announced the appointment of Robert Hoff, a long-serving firefighter and department veteran, as the new fire commissioner. Hoff, who has spent 33 years with the Chicago Fire Department (CFD), was previously the first deputy commissioner since 2008, and will now take on the top leadership role.

Third-Generation Hero Steps Into Leadership Role

Mayor Richard Daley today named Robert Hoff as the city’s new fire commissioner. Hoff, a decorated firefighter with over three decades of service, is expected to continue the strong emphasis on cross-training and professional excellence that has helped the CFD maintain its reputation as one of the best-prepared fire departments in the country.

“In addition to his bravery, he is a great administrator and leader,” Daley said during a press conference at City Hall.

Hoff, who has served as the department’s first deputy commissioner since 2008, is a third-generation firefighter. He replaces John Brooks, who recently announced his retirement. The timing of Brooks’ departure came amid ongoing investigations into allegations that a sexual harassment complaint against him had been ignored. Brooks, who was appointed in July 2008, was the second African-American to lead the department.

Hoff has twice received the Carter Harrison Award, the CFD’s highest honor for bravery. In 1992, he was recognized for rescuing elderly residents from a burning building after a gas explosion. In 1997, he saved two young twin boys from a fire in Englewood.

He also spent 21 days in a burn unit after sustaining injuries in a 1984 fire. His path to the fire department was deeply personal—his father, Thomas Hoff, a battalion chief, died in 1962 when a building collapsed while responding to an emergency.

“That’s all I ever wanted in my life was to be a firefighter,” Hoff said.

Hoff led the CFD’s response to the 9/11 attacks in New York City and later joined the team deployed to New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. With his experience and dedication, he is seen as a strong leader for the department moving forward.
