Hoff, a 54-year-old veteran with 33 years of service, is the first deputy commissioner and a third-generation firefighter. He succeeds John Brooks, who recently retired after being in office since 2008. Brooks had faced scrutiny over allegations of mishandling a sexual harassment complaint, though no official findings were released. "In addition to his bravery, he is a great administrator and leader," Daley said during the announcement. "I hope he will continue the strong cross-training programs and high level of professionalism that have made the Chicago Fire Department one of the best in the country." Hoff has earned the Carter Harrison Award twice for acts of heroism. In 1992, he rescued elderly residents after a gas explosion, and in 1997, he saved two young boys from a fire in Englewood. He also spent 21 days in a burn unit following injuries sustained in a 1984 fire. Hoff was inspired to join the fire department after his father, Thomas Hoff, a battalion chief, died in a building collapse in 1962. "That’s all I ever wanted in my life was to be a firefighter," he said. He also served as incident commander for the department’s response to the 9/11 attacks in New York and Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. His leadership and dedication have long been recognized within the department and the city. Mayor Richard Daley has named Robert Hoff, a seasoned firefighter with over three decades of service, as the new fire commissioner of Chicago. Hoff, who has served as the department’s first deputy commissioner since 2008, was officially sworn in today at a City Hall press conference.
