The Norwegian Classification Society will fully attack the Chinese market and will be building a software center in Shanghai.

The reporter learned today at the China International Maritime Exhibition that the Norwegian Classification Society, a global leader in classification services, has identified China as its most important service region worldwide since early 2008. To better support the growth of China's offshore engineering projects, the society is establishing a software development center in Shanghai and will relocate its Asian energy headquarters from Malaysia to the city. This move marks a significant step in the society’s commitment to serving the Chinese shipbuilding industry. According to an official from the Asia and Middle East division of the Energy Department at the Norwegian Classification Society, China has made impressive progress in marine engineering over the past few years, and the company fully recognizes the vast potential in this market. On March 1st, the Asian headquarters of the Energy Department was officially relocated to Shanghai. In addition, the Norwegian Classification Society recently formed a joint-venture technology research institute with the China Classification Society, aiming to further support the development of China's marine industry. With decades of experience in marine engineering, the Norwegian Classification Society has played a key role in the design and certification of many offshore structures. Approximately 40% of the world's drilling platforms, semi-submersible platforms, and new offshore floating production storage units are under their supervision. The society currently holds 15 offshore engineering contracts in China, reflecting its growing influence and presence in the region. Mr. Svensson, Chief Operating Officer of the Maritime Department and Chairman of the Software Department at the Norwegian Classification Society, emphasized that the company aims to provide tailored software solutions for China's shipping, offshore engineering, and petrochemical industries. A software development center was established in Shanghai on January 1, 2008, marking the third such facility globally, following those in Oslo and London. This expansion underscores the society's long-term strategy to be closer to the Chinese market and better serve its evolving needs.
