Lithium-ion batteries have become major energy conversion and storage devices in the fields of portable electronics, electric vehicles, renewable energy systems and the like. The global demand for lithium battery is growing at a rate of 7.7% per annum. Its market will reach 120 billion U.S. dollars by 2019 (according to the Freund's Group Market Research). Due to the limited theoretical capacity of positive and negative electrode materials, the energy density of commercial Li-ion batteries is only 100-150Wh / kg at present, and the manufacturing cost is relatively high, making it harder and harder to meet the fields of electronic intelligent terminal products and electric vehicles Performance requirements for high energy density, low cost energy storage devices. In addition, the electrode material of the traditional lithium-ion battery contains toxic metals, and discarding the battery can cause serious environmental problems.

To break through the bottleneck of existing battery technology, Tang Yongbing and his team members Zhang Xiaolong and Zhang Fan have successfully developed a brand new aluminum-graphite dual ion battery (AGDIB) after long-term research and development. The new AGDIB battery uses cheap and readily available graphite instead of the traditional high-cost lithium-containing transition metal oxides or lithium iron phosphate as the battery cathode material; the use of aluminum foil as both the negative electrode material and the negative electrode current collector; with a conventional lithium salt And carbonate solvent as electrolyte. The working principle of the battery is different from that of the traditional lithium ion battery. In the charging process, the anion graphite intercalation reaction occurs in the positive electrode graphite, and the aluminum negative electrode undergoes the alloying reaction of aluminum and lithium, and the discharge process is opposite. This new reaction mechanism not only significantly improves the operating voltage of the battery (3.8-4.6V), while significantly reducing battery quality, size and manufacturing costs, thereby enhancing the overall battery energy density.

Preliminary estimates of this type of battery full battery mass energy density and volume energy density will be as high as about 222Wh / kg. AGDIB 500Kg battery life of up to about 550 km mileage. Compared with the traditional lithium battery technology, this battery has obvious advantages, not only reduce production costs by about 40-50%, while increasing the energy density of at least 1.3-2.0 times. Successful commercialization of such aluminum-graphite cells will significantly improve the performance of existing portable electronic devices, electric vehicles and new energy storage systems. However, the current battery technology needs to be optimized, such as the need to further improve the battery cycle stability.
