Dive response in Downers Grove 7/28/11
On July 28, 2011, Stephen Wilcox shared a series of photos and details about a dramatic dive rescue that took place in Downers Grove. The incident occurred at approximately 6:40 PM on Butterfield Road (Route 56), near the intersection with I-355. A vehicle left the road and crashed into a pond located in front of a large office, hotel, and restaurant complex.
Just minutes after arriving at the scene, two members of the first responding fire company entered the water. Tom Christianson and Andy Hoff located a victim outside the car but still near the vehicle, in about ten feet of water. They successfully pulled the individual to shore and transported him to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was reported to be in critical condition.
Stephen Wilcox captured several powerful images of the event. One photo shows the path the car took as it plunged into the water. Another highlights how the vehicle had gone over the curb, struck a bench, and then entered the lake. A third image reveals the car and the victim near what appears to be floating structures, roughly two-thirds of the way across the pond. Finally, a fourth photo captures the firefighters relaying information to their colleagues during the operation.
