Dive response in Downers Grove 7/28/11
On July 28, 2011, at around 6:40 PM, a dramatic and life-saving incident unfolded in Downers Grove. Stephen Wilcox shared several photos and details about a car accident that led to a daring dive rescue. The event took place at 2111 Butterfield Road (Route 56), near the southwest corner of Route 56 and I-355. A vehicle left the road and plunged into a lake in front of a commercial complex that includes an office, hotel, and restaurant.
As soon as emergency responders arrived, two members from the first arriving unit quickly entered the water. Tom Christianson and Andy Hoff located a victim outside but still near the car, in approximately ten feet of water. They safely brought the individual to shore, where he was then transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in critical condition.
Stephen Wilcox captured several images documenting the scene. One photo shows the path the car took into the pond, clearly illustrating how it veered off the road. Another image highlights the damage caused by the car as it ran over a curb and hit a bench before entering the water. A third photo reveals the car and the victim, who were found near what appears to be floating docks, roughly two-thirds of the way across the lake. Lastly, a fourth image captures the divers, Tom Christianson and Andy Hoff, communicating with other firefighters after the rescue.
The Tribune covered the incident in a detailed article, which you can read here.
This rescue serves as a powerful reminder of the quick thinking and bravery of first responders, who often act under intense pressure to save lives.
