Upon arrival, firefighters faced heavy smoke billowing from every part of the home. Stephen Wilcox photo Stephen Wilcox has shared a detailed account and photos of another significant fire that took place in western Dupage County (MABAS Division 12) last month. Here’s his report: Wheaton Fire: 419 N. Ellis on June 17, 2011 at 04:47. The two-story structure, built around 1900, was a balloon-frame with lath and plaster walls and knob-and-tube wiring. When crews arrived, the weather was warm and humid. The fire had spread to all floors and the attic. Neighbors reported they believed someone might still be inside. The extra alarm was activated for these three reasons. Multiple handlines and six ground ladders were deployed. Notably, the family had just returned from the Far East.  A Wheaton firefighter begins ventilating windows while other units make entry. Wheaton Truck 417 was the first unit on scene. Stephen Wilcox photo The fire originated beneath the staircase, which contributed to its rapid spread.
