Warren-Waukegan Fire Protection District news

Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:

Residents in the Warren-Waukegan Fire Protection District are set to see a significant drop in their property tax bills following the approval of a record-breaking $1.2 million tax abatement—by far the largest in the district’s history and one of the most substantial local abatements in recent years.

The decision was made by the district board last week, reflecting its ongoing efforts to address rising concerns about property taxes among residents. While it's still too early to determine the exact impact on individual households, a similar $300,000 abatement from the previous year led to an approximate $75 reduction per household.

The district serves unincorporated areas between Waukegan and Gurnee, extending as far west as Grayslake. It covers roughly 3,300 homes and structures, with Park City also included, even though it is an incorporated city.

Thanks to smart financial planning and collaboration with Gurnee, the partnership has proven to be highly effective. Just 15 years ago, the district was running an average annual deficit of $800,000. Today, it has built up enough cash reserves to make this major abatement possible.

By expanding Gurnee Fire Department’s coverage, the district also enables the department to access grants and funding that would otherwise be unavailable. This has helped strengthen the fire services provided to the community.

The district has invested in multiple ambulances, fire engines, and even contributed half the cost of Gurnee’s newest ladder truck. Additionally, over a decade ago, the district passed a resolution ensuring no resident would face out-of-pocket costs for ambulance services.
