California Dept. of Transportation Moves to AutoCAD Civil 3D for All New Projects

California’s Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is one of the largest transportation agencies in the U.S., responsible for managing over 50,000 miles of highways and freeways. In addition to roads, Caltrans oversees intercity rail services, more than 400 public-use airports, and special-use hospital heliports. When Caltrans makes a major technology decision, it sends ripples through the entire transportation engineering community—especially among civil engineers and state DOT professionals across the country. In June 2011, Caltrans made a bold move by replacing its long-standing Autodesk CAiCE software with AutoCAD Civil 3D. This shift was part of a growing global trend toward BIM (Building Information Modeling) and more integrated design solutions. The transition marked a significant step forward in modernizing infrastructure planning and design processes. Now in its second year of full implementation, nearly 2,000 engineers and surveyors have been trained on AutoCAD Civil 3D. The success of this initiative has led to a formal memo from the Chief of the Division of Design, stating that all new projects starting July 1, 2014, must be designed using Civil 3D. This effectively ends the use of CAiCE within Caltrans. One of the key factors behind this successful transition has been the development of standardized workflows and software templates tailored to Caltrans’ specific needs. These TOOLS help ensure consistency and compliance across both internal teams and external partners involved in infrastructure projects. The benefits of this change are already becoming clear. From improved collaboration to enhanced visualization and data integration, Caltrans is setting a strong example for other transportation agencies looking to modernize their design practices. A great example of the power of Civil 3D can be seen in the 3D visualization of the Presidio Parkway in San Francisco, created by Parsons Brinckerhoff. Another impressive project is the El Dorado County DOT roadway design, which showcases how Civil 3D can streamline complex road development.
