CNHTC Builds National Research Center

The National Heavy-Duty Truck Engineering Research Center was officially launched at the China National Heavy Duty Truck Group (CNHTC) recently. With a total investment of RMB 1.21 billion, this center is built upon the foundation of CNHTC and marks the first and only state-level engineering research center dedicated to heavy-duty vehicle technology in China's automotive industry. It represents a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to elevate its technological capabilities and global competitiveness in the heavy truck sector. Ouyang Minggao, director of the technical committee of the center, emphasized that while the global financial crisis has severely impacted Western heavy truck manufacturers, it has created new opportunities for China's industry to expand internationally. He noted that the newly established center will help accelerate the transformation of China's heavy truck industry from a manufacturing-driven model to one focused on innovation and creation. This shift is expected to enhance the overall technological level of the sector, strengthen core competencies, and bring Chinese heavy trucks closer to international standards. To achieve these goals, the center plans to establish four key industry hubs: a technological innovation center, an achievement transformation center, an information and technology exchange center, and a talent training center. These centers will serve as platforms for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and skill development across the industry. The project will be implemented in two phases. The first phase, which will last three years, involves an investment of 337 million yuan. Upon completion, the facility will be equipped to conduct routine performance testing, reliability assessments, and comprehensive road evaluations. It will also support daily operational needs of the testing site, ensuring efficient and effective operations. Liu Wei, Director of the China National Heavy Duty Truck Technology Center, mentioned that the center will focus on building five key technology platforms: R&D platforms for heavy-duty vehicle chassis and body systems, advanced automotive electronics, testing and evaluation of assembly components, development of new materials and processes, and application platforms for remanufacturing technologies. These platforms are designed to drive innovation and improve the quality and efficiency of heavy truck production. In the first quarter of this year, CNHTC produced 32,747 heavy-duty vehicles and sold 31,889 units, maintaining a stable performance compared to the same period last year. The company's domestic market share reached 31.2%, reflecting a year-on-year increase of 11.9%. In March alone, the company sold 18,029 units, marking a 19.6% increase compared to the previous year and setting a new monthly sales record for domestic heavy-duty trucks. CNHTC stated that it will leverage the research center to harness its industry leadership, technological expertise, information resources, capital, and human talent. By promoting industry development, resource integration, and technical innovation, the center aims to play a crucial role in advancing the Chinese heavy truck industry. Its mission includes driving R&D, demonstrating applications, and providing technical services to help the sector transition from "Made in China" to "Created in China." Additionally, the center is the first national-level engineering technology research center established in Shandong Province through a manufacturing company, and it marks a breakthrough for Jinan in establishing a national-level research institution.
