Urban logistics vehicle to Europe, Nanjing Iveco took the lead

As early as the end of 2007, Guangdong set its sights on surpassing Hong Kong, Singapore, and even some European cities. As one of the most vital industries in the Pearl River Delta (PRD), the logistics sector plays a key role in achieving Guangdong’s broader development goals. While the management systems, operational procedures, and service standards of the PRD logistics industry have become increasingly internationalized over recent years, the city logistics vehicles have not kept up with this rapid progress. Calling them “advanced,” but they remain a bottleneck. Guangzhou, the core of the PRD, implemented the National III emission standards back in September 2006. However, to date, less than 20% of the city's vehicles meet these standards. In areas where the standards are not met, logistics vehicles often make up a significant portion of the traffic. In contrast, European cities have already adopted Euro IV emission standards. Experts point out that the low compliance rate with environmental regulations has become a major obstacle to the internationalization of the PRD’s logistics industry. Beyond environmental concerns, there are still significant gaps between the PRD and advanced global cities in terms of logistics vehicle standards. For example, in Europe, city logistics vehicles must be closed vans to ensure non-exposed transportation. However, in many cities across the PRD, open trucks and uncovered cargo are still common sights. The presence of outdated logistics vehicles is clearly hindering the region’s logistics modernization, drawing attention from local authorities. It’s reported that cities like Shenzhen have introduced restrictions on light trucks entering city centers. Additionally, China’s Road Transport Regulations encourage freight operators to use closed transportation to ensure cleanliness and safety. These measures signal a growing awareness of the need for improvement. An upgrade trend is gradually emerging. In recent years, logistics vehicles in the PRD have shown a clear shift toward higher standards. High-end models like the Qingling 700P and Jiangling Kai Rui have been in high demand, with strong market responses. According to Shi Qicai, Deputy General Manager of Nanjing Iveco Sales Company, features such as closed transportation, high power, environmental friendliness, and low fuel consumption have become the main direction for urban logistics vehicle upgrades in the region. Nanjing Iveco, known for its eco-friendly and fuel-efficient designs, has positioned itself well in this trend. Over the past few years, Iveco has maintained an annual growth rate of 20% in the Guangdong market, with Yuejin light truck sales steadily increasing. "Environmental protection should not only look at the present, but also consider future trends," said Shi Yucai. This year, Nanjing Iveco introduced two new models in Guangdong: Baodi and Ouka. The Baodi series, equipped with the F1C engine, meets Euro IV emission standards and can satisfy environmental requirements for at least the next five years. The Yuejin Oka, featuring a SOFIM engine, is the only national light truck with a price tag of 80,000 RMB and uses a European engine. "Environmental protection is our core strength," said Shi Jiecai. "In addition, we’ve seen a growing share of all-in-one trucks in our logistics vehicle sales in Guangdong. With stricter logistics regulations and increased emphasis on safety, our competitiveness will continue to grow." The newly launched Baodi Almighty series targets urban distribution and passenger transport, while the Europa and Oka are aimed at the urban logistics market, offering comprehensive solutions for Guangdong users. According to industry analysts, Guangzhou may take advantage of the 2010 Asian Games to accelerate the adoption of National IV emission standards, and it's likely that the entire PRD region will follow soon. "With environmental upgrades as a catalyst, the logistics vehicle market in Guangdong is bound to undergo a transformation. European commercial vehicles like Nanjing Iveco are expected to have a bright future in the PRD."
