How to ensure Europe’s EV charging infrastructure buildout succeeds

The EU's Fit for 55 package is a bold step toward achieving its climate goals, and at the heart of it lies the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR). This proposed legislation aims to accelerate the shift to electric mobility by setting minimum charging infrastructure requirements across member states. However, while the initiative is promising, we believe that its current approach may not be sufficient to fully support the transition. AFIR proposes a charger-to-vehicle ratio, but this "one-size-fits-all" strategy fails to account for the varying levels of EV adoption across Europe. In countries with fewer electric vehicles, the targets may not significantly boost infrastructure development, leaving drivers without enough charging options. Meanwhile, in countries where EVs are already popular, the current targets may already be met, offering no incentive for further growth. This creates a gap in the rollout of electric mobility and could slow down progress toward a sustainable future. Electric mobility has the potential to be a powerful catalyst for the energy transition. It can reduce emissions, create green jobs, and improve urban air quality. But for this to happen, EVs need to be as convenient as traditional vehicles. That means reliable and widespread charging infrastructure is essential. Without it, many drivers remain hesitant to make the switch. One solution is to move away from uniform targets and instead implement tailored, capacity-based goals. Countries with slower EV adoption should be encouraged to invest more in charging infrastructure to ease range anxiety and support future growth. At the same time, countries with strong EV markets should be given the freedom to develop their own strategies without unnecessary restrictions. By adopting a more flexible approach, the EU can ensure that all regions benefit from the transition to electric mobility. This would not only help meet the 2030 emissions targets but also create a competitive and resilient charging network that supports both drivers and businesses.
