HOW A HOT WATER COIL WORKS

Hot water coils are heat exchangers made up of rows of tubes surrounded by aluminum fins. As cold air passes over the coil, it absorbs heat from the hot water flowing through the tubes, warming the air efficiently. This process is essential for maintaining comfort in HVAC systems.

HOT WATER COIL DESIGN

These coils come in various designs and materials depending on the application. Most commonly, they use copper tubes with aluminum fins, though stainless steel options are available for harsher environments like food processing or corrosive areas.

Some hot water coils have headers, while others do not. Headers can help distribute water evenly, and their presence may vary based on the brand or model, such as when replacing units from Heatcraft™ or McQuay®.

SIZING A HOT WATER COIL

When replacing a hot water coil, it’s important to measure the fin height, length, and number of tube rows. For new installations, you’ll need details like CFM, entering air temperature, GPM, and desired leaving air temperature.
