It was an absolute pleasure for us to shoot a lookbook at the iconic Neutra VDL Studio and Residences, located on Silverlake Boulevard in Los Angeles. Designed by the renowned Viennese-American architect Richard Neutra and funded by Dutch philanthropist Dr. C.H. Van Der Leeuw, this structure was groundbreaking when it was completed in 1932. The building is a true reflection of modernist ideals, with its extensive use of glass, rooftop garden, adjustable louvers, and mirrors that seamlessly blend the interior with the surrounding environment. The VDL Studio and Residences are not just a historical gem—they represent a bold vision of the future of architecture. As we explored the space, it became clear how deeply rooted Mid-Century Design principles are in our own brand philosophy. The materials used in the home were intentionally exposed, creating a raw and honest aesthetic that resonates with our approach to craftsmanship and design. At David Kind, we believe in highlighting the beauty of quality materials, just as Neutra did in his work. Working in such a historic and inspiring space was a dream come true for our team. Our brand has always drawn from the creative minds of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s—designers who themselves were influenced by Neutra’s innovative approach. The exposed materials and clean lines of the VDL Studio and Residences guided our design choices and helped shape the visual language of the lookbook. It was a perfect match between the past and present. The rooms within the VDL Studio and Residences are designed with a strong emphasis on functionality and adaptability. With built-in storage, modular layouts, and warm tones, the space provided the ideal backdrop for our lookbook. It felt natural to pair this architectural masterpiece with our handmade eyewear, as both embody a commitment to quality, purpose, and timeless style. Today, the VDL Studio and Residences are preserved and maintained by the College of Environmental Design and Department of Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona. The site was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior, recognizing its significant contribution to American architecture. While the house is open for public tours on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the current situation due to the pandemic has temporarily closed the property. We hope to visit soon and experience its magic once again. At David Kind, we are inspired by the visionaries of the past and strive to create eyewear that is both timeless and thoughtfully crafted. By blending traditional techniques with cutting-edge technology, we ensure every piece we make is a tribute to innovation and quality. To learn more about how our eyewear is made, click here.
