We had the privilege of shooting a lookbook at the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences, a stunning architectural gem located in Los Angeles along Silverlake Boulevard. Designed by the renowned Viennese-American architect Richard Neutra and funded by Dutch philanthropist Dr. CH Van Der Leeuw, this space was groundbreaking when it was completed in 1932. The studio and residences are a perfect example of modernist design, featuring large glass panels, a rooftop garden, adjustable louvers, and mirrors that seamlessly blend the interior with the surrounding environment. This iconic building not only represents Mid-Century Design but also showcases Neutra’s forward-thinking vision for architecture. Its clean lines, open spaces, and emphasis on natural light continue to inspire architects and designers today. For our team, working within these walls was an incredible experience, as we deeply admire the work of mid-20th century creatives who were influenced by Neutra and his philosophy of integrating nature and function in design. The materials used in the VDL Studio and Residences were intentionally left exposed, emphasizing their raw beauty and functionality. This approach resonates strongly with us at David Kind, where we prioritize high-quality materials and strive to highlight their natural elegance in every piece we create. Working in such a space deepened our appreciation for how form and function can coexist harmoniously, and it directly influenced the aesthetic choices we made for our latest collection. One of the most striking aspects of the VDL Studio and Residences is its focus on multi-use, modular spaces that are both practical and beautiful. The warm color palette and built-in functionality created the perfect backdrop for our lookbook. It felt natural to pair the home with our handmade eyewear, as both share a commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and timeless design. Today, the Neutra VDL Studio and Residences are maintained by the College of Environmental Design and the Department of Architecture at Cal Poly Pomona. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Visitors can take guided tours on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with ticket prices set at $15 for adults and $10 for seniors, students, and faculty. Unfortunately, due to ongoing health concerns, the house remains temporarily closed until it's safe to welcome guests again. At David Kind, we draw inspiration from visionary designers and thinkers throughout history. We believe that understanding the past helps us create pieces that are not only stylish but also meaningful. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern technology, we ensure that every pair of glasses we make is both functional and beautiful.
