Northfield EMS Box Alarm 4-21-13 – fiery crash on the Edens

It was just after 9 PM on a Sunday evening when the Northfield Fire Department first received a call about a small brush fire along the Edens Expressway (I94), near Willow Road. Additional reports soon came in mentioning a truck fire, prompting further units to head towards the scene. As the responding teams approached the expressway, they discovered a massive blaze in the center median of the northbound lanes, roughly half a mile north of Willow Road. It turned out to be a fully involved tractor-trailer combination atop a car. An immediate EMS Box Alarm was triggered, bringing ambulances from Winnetka, Wilmette, Northbrook, and Glencoe, in addition to the Northfield ambulance already on-site conducting triage. Support also arrived from Morton Grove, Wilmette tower ladder and engine, and Glenview truck, supplementing the Northfield squad and engine. Due to the intensity of the fire, Crash Truck 23 from Wheeling and Crash Truck 39 from Prospect Heights, both ARFF units, were called in. Fortunately, the occupants of the car were already out by the time the fire crews arrived, thanks to the quick actions of nearby motorists. Three individuals, including the two people inside the car trapped beneath the trailer, were taken to the hospital. This video footage was captured from along the frontage road. Prospect Heights Crash Truck 39 reported that they had used up all their onboard extinguishing agents by the time they left the scene. The images below were provided by Larry Shapiro.
