Still & Box Alarm in Chicago, 2-4-16

Thursday afternoon (February 4th, 2016), Chicago responded to a Still & Box Alarm at a vacant 1 ½-story wooden structure located at 6125 South Justine. By the time I arrived, the fire had been declared out, but I stayed around to observe some of the overhaul process. Interestingly, Squad 5A was temporarily unavailable due to maintenance needs, so they had to use a spare squad vehicle that was previously stripped for a TV show. The fire had spread to two adjacent buildings. One was vacant while the other was occupied, which added complexity to the situation. It was quite an intense scene, with firefighters working diligently to ensure everything was under control. I took some pictures from various angles, capturing moments like the firefighters venting the peaked roof with an axe and their efforts during the overhaul phase. Looking at the images, you can see how Pierce's aerial ladder was strategically positioned to reach parts of the house that were otherwise hard to access. There’s also a clear shot of the Chicago Fire Department's mobile command board, showcasing their organized approach even in challenging scenarios. Another photo highlights the squad captain at the scene, providing leadership amidst the activity. As I walked around, I couldn’t help but notice the dedication of these firefighters. They were not only focused on extinguishing the flames but also ensuring no hidden dangers remained. Their teamwork was evident as they worked together to clear debris and assess damages. It’s always fascinating to witness such operations firsthand. If you're interested in seeing more detailed shots, including close-ups of the equipment used and additional perspectives of the fire site, they are available at shapirophotography.net. These photos really capture the intensity and detail of the event, offering a glimpse into the demanding work of firefighters. Overall, it was a sobering yet educational experience to observe this fire response. It reminded me once again of the bravery and professionalism displayed by those who put themselves in harm's way to protect others.
