Still & Box Alarm in Chicago, 2-4-16
Thursday afternoon (February 4th, 2016), Chicago responded to a Still & Box Alarm at a vacant 1 ½ story wooden frame structure located at 6125 South Justine. By the time I arrived, the fire had already been declared under control, though I stayed around for part of the overhaul process. Interestingly, Squad 5A was temporarily out of service due to maintenance, so they were utilizing a spare squad vehicle that had been prepared for use in a popular TV show.
The fire had spread to two adjacent buildings. One of them was an empty structure, while the other was still occupied. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. As I walked around the scene, I couldn’t help but notice how efficiently the firefighters were working to ensure the safety of everyone involved. There was a sense of urgency mixed with professionalism, which is always reassuring when witnessing such operations.
I took several photos that capture different aspects of the incident. One shows Engine 101 arriving on the scene, ready to assist. Another image highlights a Pierce ladder truck positioned strategically to access the affected building from above. You can also see the mobile command board set up nearby, serving as the nerve center for coordinating efforts. There’s even a close-up of the squad captain overseeing the situation, clearly focused on the task at hand.
Other images document the intense moments during the firefighting effort, like firefighters using axes to ventilate the peaked roof or engaging in thorough overhaul work afterward. It’s fascinating to observe their dedication and precision in action. In one shot, you’ll find a spare squad vehicle parked nearby, ready to step in if needed.

Each picture tells its own story about this particular event, offering insights into both the chaos and order inherent in urban firefighting. This experience reminded me once again why these brave men and women deserve our utmost respect and gratitude.
