Still & Box at 12300 S. Michigan Ave. 2-21-2013

This is Dennis McGuire, Jr., reporting live from the scene of a fire that broke out earlier today at an auto repair shop located at 12300 South Michigan Avenue. The structure, which is a single-story building, was fully engulfed in flames when Engine Company 62 arrived on the scene. The intense fire quickly spread through the roof, creating a challenging situation for the responding firefighters. After gaining access to the building, the incident commander from the 22nd Battalion requested a Still and Box alarm, which brought additional resources to the scene. Firefighters worked diligently to extinguish the blaze, with Engine Companies 115 and 75 leading the charge using 2.5-inch lines to quickly control the fire. Despite the efforts of Tower Ladder 34 and Squad 5, neither of these units had to deploy their aerial equipment due to the rapid response and effective firefighting strategy. Following the fire's containment, crews transitioned into overhaul mode, meticulously checking for any remaining hotspots and ensuring the safety of the surrounding area. Battalion Chief 24 and other commanders were on hand to oversee operations and coordinate the extensive overhaul process. Field Chiefs 4-5-6 and 4-5-8 were also present, providing critical support and guidance as the situation unfolded. Photographs taken by myself and fellow firefighter Dan McInerney capture the intensity and scale of the operation. From Engine 75 with its hose lines strategically positioned to the towering presence of Tower Ladder 34, every detail of the scene reflects the dedication and skill of the Chicago Fire Department. Additional images show the extensive overhaul efforts, including the opening of bay doors and thorough examination of the roof structure. It’s worth noting that this fire occurred in a vacant building, prompting the battalion commander to request an Early Fire Alarm Offense (EFAO) to notify the city’s Building Department. This proactive measure underscores the importance of identifying and addressing potential hazards in unoccupied structures. As we continue to document this event, it’s clear that the swift action and teamwork displayed by all involved parties prevented what could have been a far worse outcome. The Chicago Fire Department once again demonstrated its commitment to protecting both property and lives. More updates and photos will follow as the investigation into the cause of the fire progresses. Stay tuned for further details from the scene.
