Barrington 2nd & 4th Alarm fire 10-10-12 (update 2)
Larry Shapiro sent over several photos taken during the early hours of the 4-11 alarm fire that broke out in Barrington Hills last night. It was quite the scene, with flames spreading quickly through the large structures on the property.
The first image shows the view from Ridge Road as Larry arrived on the scene. You can see the intense smoke and flames already engulfing one of the larger barns. The sheer size of the fire is immediately apparent, with multiple pieces of equipment already mobilized to tackle the blaze.
As you scroll further down, there’s a shot of the portable water tanks set up along Ridge Road near the entrance to the private drive. This was crucial for maintaining an adequate water supply given the remote location. Crystal Lake fire crews were busy filling these tanks using their tanker trucks, ensuring firefighters had enough resources to keep the fire at bay.
One of the more striking photos shows Barrington Engine 361 drafting water directly from the portable tanks. It’s a testament to the quick thinking and coordination required in such situations. And then there’s the image of Barrington Quint 363, its large diameter hose stretched over 1,000 feet from the road all the way to the burning building. That gives you a sense of just how far the fire had spread by the time help arrived.
Another powerful photo captures the extent of the damage after the fire had fully taken hold. The structure involved had completely collapsed, leaving behind only charred remains. Even the rear of the building showed significant signs of destruction, with firefighters still working to extinguish lingering hotspots.
What struck me most were some of the behind-the-scenes shots. There’s one showing Carpentersville firefighters working a line in what they’ve designated as the 'C' sector. Their focus and determination are evident in every detail of their gear and posture. Another great shot highlights the teamwork between departments, like the Elgin Fire Department bringing their Truck 1 to assist.
And let’s not forget the importance of logistics. The Wauconda Fire District had a tanker standing by, ready to provide additional support if needed. It’s these small but critical elements that often make the difference in high-stakes operations like this.
There’s also a shot of the apparatus staging area, where Larry captured the chaos and order simultaneously as various units lined Ridge Road in both directions. It’s a reminder of just how many resources it takes to respond to something of this magnitude.
For those interested in seeing more, there’s a large gallery available here, along with even more images accessible via another link. This event will no doubt be remembered as one of the larger fires in the area this year, showcasing both the dangers faced by first responders and the incredible effort it takes to bring such a situation under control.
