Lincolnshire is buzzing with excitement over an upcoming charity event that's set to bring together local heroes in a friendly competition to support a young girl battling cancer. The Daily Herald recently reported on this unique charity cook-off, which promises to deliver both delicious food and heartfelt generosity. This weekend, Lincolnshire’s police officers and firefighters are trading their badges and uniforms for aprons and utensils. Their mission? To raise funds and awareness for 6-year-old Ava Lee, who was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia earlier this year. Ava, who lives just outside of Lincolnshire, urgently needs a bone-marrow transplant to help her body produce healthy blood cells. Unfortunately, none of her immediate family members are a match, so they're relying on the kindness of strangers to step up. The event, organized by Lincolnshire Police Officer Brian Balinski and Fire Chief Fred Krueger, will take place on September 27 at Village Hall, located at 1 Olde Half Day Road. It's shaping up to be a lively day filled with mouthwatering ribs, pulled pork, and beef brisket. As Balinski humorously noted, "Firemen are often known to be good cooks," adding, "We thought this would be the perfect chance to showcase our culinary talents while doing something truly meaningful." Fire Chief Krueger chimed in with a playful jab, saying, "We’re known as great cooks, and they’re known as great eaters. They’re really outmatched." Ava’s mom, Esther Lee, shared how her daughter’s diagnosis came as a shock. After visiting the doctor due to a persistent skin infection, tests revealed that Ava had developed a rare type of leukemia. Since then, she’s undergone seven months of chemotherapy. Without a matching bone-marrow donor, the next option could involve an umbilical-cord blood transplant, but finding the right match remains crucial. Balinski emphasized that getting tested to become a marrow donor is straightforward—just a simple cheek swab—but the associated costs can deter potential donors. To cover these expenses and encourage participation, the firefighters and police officers will be selling samples of their dishes. Each bite sold brings them closer to their goal of raising enough money for at least 40 new donors to join the National Marrow Donor Program’s Be The Match initiative. Esther Lee expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming community response, saying, "We’re honored and humbled by everyone’s support. This event means everything to us." She also mentioned that Ava, despite her challenges, continues to stay positive and hopeful, drawing strength from the love around her. As residents gather to enjoy great food and camaraderie, they’ll also have the chance to make a life-changing difference. Whether through donations or becoming a registered donor, every contribution brings Ava one step closer to finding the match she desperately needs. For those looking to participate, the event offers more than just a chance to savor delicious barbecue—it provides an opportunity to contribute to a cause that touches countless lives. Who knows? Your support might just save someone’s future.
