Working fire in Buffalo Grove, 12-30-14
Late last night on December 30th, I received a message from Larry Shapiro about a fire incident that unfolded in a townhouse community in Buffalo Grove. According to his account, a resident managed to put out what initially seemed like a minor fire outside a townhouse located at 211 Winding Oak Lane. However, when Engine 26 arrived to confirm that the situation was under control, they discovered something more serious. The fire had sneaked under the rear sliding door and spread into the crawlspace beneath the unit.
This discovery quickly prompted the Buffalo Grove Fire Department to upgrade the response from a simple investigation to a full-scale working fire operation. Assistance was called in from neighboring departments including Arlington Heights, Long Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Palatine, and Wauconda. The firefighters worked tirelessly, eventually deciding to remove nearly all the flooring of the affected unit to get a clear view of the crawlspace and ensure the fire hadn’t spread beyond the single property.
I’ve included some photos taken by Larry Shapiro that vividly capture the intensity of the scene. You can see the firefighters geared up and ready for action, using powerful saws to cut through the plywood flooring as part of their efforts. There's also a striking image of a firefighter holding a fire hose amidst thick plumes of smoke, and another showing a Ferrara tower ladder illuminated against the night sky. Other shots highlight the coordinated teamwork involved, such as pulling supply hoses off the engine and accessing the crawlspace to tackle the blaze directly.
Interestingly, there’s even footage of the original fire on a wooden deck, which likely served as the starting point for this unexpected escalation. It’s clear that despite the initial optimism, the situation evolved rapidly, demanding a swift and decisive response from the fire crews involved.
As someone who appreciates community resilience, it was inspiring to see how these first responders came together to manage the crisis. While the images tell part of the story, they don’t fully capture the dedication and skill required to handle such emergencies. Let’s hope the residents affected by this incident can recover quickly, and that lessons learned from the event help prevent similar situations in the future.
