Autodesk contributes $1 million to expand Group Effort Initiative educational programming
Las Vegas, NV – Autodesk, Inc., a global leader in design and software solutions, recently announced a $1 million donation to the Group Effort Initiative (GEI). This organization focuses on establishing a robust pathway for individuals from underrepresented communities to gain hands-on experience and foster long-term careers within the entertainment sector.
In light of the challenging times brought about by the historic Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strikes, the entertainment industry's downtime significantly impacted below-the-line workers and aspiring professionals alike. In response, and thanks to Autodesk's generous contribution, GEI expanded its educational and training programs to keep participants engaged with the industry during the lull. Over the next two years, these efforts will grow further across the eighteen cities GEI serves, ensuring continuous learning opportunities.
"Back in 2020, when my wife Blake and I established GEI, our goal was to create consistent pathways into the entertainment industry for marginalized groups," shared GEI co-founder Ryan Reynolds. "Thanks to Autodesk's support, we can now offer more stability and adaptability, allowing participants to seize new opportunities and navigate the rapidly evolving landscape of entertainment. It's incredible to see how Autodesk's tools empower creativity, and today, we're incredibly thankful for their help in shaping countless futures."

Later this week, Ryan Reynolds will join Autodesk’s Chief Operating Officer, Steve Blum, in Las Vegas for a fireside chat at Autodesk University, the company’s annual design and manufacturing conference. The conversation will delve into the theme of adaptation, exploring strategies to adjust in industries experiencing rapid transformations and ways to drive meaningful change.
With Autodesk's backing, GEI is cultivating a flexible and resilient workforce. Training programs range from a comprehensive four-day Production Assistant bootcamp to virtual and in-person workshops covering cameras and cinematography, non-fiction filmmaking, climate storytelling, and post-production career paths. Additional professional development activities include mock interviews, resume reviews, and networking events.
"Autodesk is fully committed to equipping the next generation of creators with the necessary skills and experiences to succeed in a dynamic workplace," said Steve Blum, COO of Autodesk. "Through our partnership with GEI, we're excited to empower future leaders in the entertainment industry with enhanced access to training and networking opportunities, helping them sustain momentum and achieve success."
GEI has also facilitated one-on-one and group office hours tailored to individual professional development needs. Its mentorship program, which has connected participants with 167 industry professionals to date, provides personalized guidance and career counseling.
"During these strikes, we listened closely to our participants' concerns and seized the moment to ensure no gaps emerged in their career progression," noted GEI Executive Director Sumi Parekh. "With Autodesk's support, not only are we enhancing skillsets and knowledge for current participants, but we're also expanding job prospects into new cities."
Securing employment remains a key focus for GEI, bridging gaps in an industry where networking and personal connections play crucial roles. During the strikes, GEI secured additional paid internships through public-private partnerships. Since June, GEI has placed 70 Angelenos in paid internships supported by the City of Los Angeles’s Economic and Workforce Development Department and L.A. County’s Department of Economic Opportunity.
