Grass fire 4-7-14, Fox River & Countryside FRD
Hey everyone,
This is John Tulipano reporting live from the scene. I just got word that St. Charles Engine 103 and Brush 101 were called out to 4000 West Lincoln Highway (Route 38) for what was initially thought to be a small brush fire. However, things escalated quickly. While they were en route, Engine 103 radioed in about an ominous cloud formation overhead. By the time they reached the location, it was clear this wasn't your average blaze—10 acres of thick brush were ablaze and spreading rapidly toward the west.
Chief 112 arrived shortly after and immediately requested backup from Batavia and Geneva. Then Elburn's chief showed up and asked for additional resources, including two brush trucks and a tanker from Elburn. It was a scramble to get enough manpower and equipment on site.
In the meantime, Fox River and Countryside (FRC) was also dispatched by Kane County. They had their hands full dealing with two other brush fires at the far northeastern edge of their jurisdiction. Eventually, they made it here with both of their engines, a tanker, and two brush trucks.
When FRC arrived, they split the firefighting efforts, taking the west side of the fire to protect a large barn, house, and several outbuildings. Their tanker played a crucial role, refilling Elburn, St. Charles, and their own brush rigs multiple times to help bring the inferno under control. Interestingly enough, it turned out the fire was technically within Fox River and Countryside's district. The address was 39w962 Route 38.
The entire operation was intense. You could feel the heat even from a distance, and the smoke was thick enough to obscure the sun. Firefighters worked tirelessly, moving equipment and hoses across the field as the flames licked at anything in their path. It was a true team effort, with everyone pitching in to ensure no structures were lost.
For those interested in visuals, I’ve attached some photos I took during the incident. The first one shows a group of white fire engines lined up, ready to tackle the blaze. Another captures firefighters working hard amidst the chaos, while a third highlights a brush truck spraying water onto the flames. There are more shots of engines pumping water and fire trucks in action.

Stay safe out there, folks. This was a close call, but thanks to the quick thinking and hard work of all involved, we avoided any major losses today.
