This is a message from Steve Redick: Here's the radio traffic from a 3-11 alarm at a Disaster Plan 3 incident at the infamous 6531 Lowe building. This happened early in the morning while my dad was chief of the 12th Battalion. The chief who usually relieved him, Bill Foran, was still on duty and hadn’t been relieved yet, so he responded as the division marshal. The captain of Truck 20, known for his classic radio replies, was Richard Fitzpatrick. The voice coming from the Englewood office was Harry Haddon in his prime. The building had extremely long hallways, and masks weren’t widely used back then—people were just hanging around everywhere. It was quite the scene. The chaos, the lack of proper equipment, and the way people reacted all add up to a very real and raw account of a fire department in action. These kinds of stories help us understand the evolution of emergency response and the bravery of those who served before us. Thanks to Steve for sharing this piece of history with us.
