This is from Eric Haak: The Harvey Fire Department had a very busy afternoon on Friday, July 14. The department was first called to 14631 S. Halsted Street around 12:15 p.m. Upon arrival, they found a two-and-a-half-story, 25x50 frame apartment building engulfed in heavy fire with nearby structures at risk. Just ten minutes later, crews reported another fire at 14538 S. Union Street, about a block away. This second incident involved a one-and-a-half-story, 24x45 frame home that was already fully involved. In total, four alarms were activated to manage both fires, and several other departments responded as well, according to radio reports. I arrived on the scene about two hours after the initial call, expecting just to do some basic reporting and take a few photos of the fire trucks. I didn’t take any pictures of the destroyed home on Union Street or what remained of the building on Halsted. The damage was extensive, and it was clear how quickly these fires spread. It's always sobering to see the aftermath of such incidents and to witness the dedication of the firefighters who respond under pressure.
