House fire in Highland Park, 2-12-15

Highland Park firefighters responded to a fire at 24245 St. Johns Avenue this afternoon after workers reported flames in the insulation between the second floor and the attic of a large, unoccupied two-story home that was under renovation. Upon arrival, the first units encountered heavy smoke and quickly upgraded the alarm to Code 4, indicating a working fire. Firefighters launched an aggressive attack, successfully containing the blaze to the area of origin and preventing it from spreading further. Mutual aid units included Highwood Truck 37, Lake Forest Engine 412, Deerfield-Bannockburn Truck 20, and Northfields Truck 29. On scene, Highland Park’s response included both ambulances, all three engine companies, along with the chief and battalion chief. The fire is believed to have been caused by construction activities, though the exact cause is still under investigation. Photos from the scene were captured by Larry Shapiro, showing the extent of the damage and the emergency response. Additional images include a Seagrave fire engine, a Pierce engine connected to a hydrant, and a Highland Park FD Battalion Chief on duty. One photo also shows a firefighter handling a large-diameter hose during the cold weather conditions. More photos are available at shapirophotography.net.
