Wheeling dedicates new headquarters station
The Wheeling Fire Department officially opened its new headquarters, Station 24, on Saturday in a heartfelt ceremony that honored both the past and future of the department. The event featured a formal ribbon-cutting led by Village President Judy Abruscato and Esther Koeppen, whose late husband, Bernhardt Koeppen, was the first full-time fire chief of the Wheeling Fire Department in 1969. The gathering brought together community members, local officials, and families of firefighters, creating a warm and celebratory atmosphere.
Among the attendees was Arlington Heights Deputy Chief Kenneth Koeppen, who was present to honor his father’s legacy. The new station symbolizes not only modernization but also a deep connection to the history and values of the department. Firefighters were joined by their children and loved ones during the dedication, making it a family-friendly occasion that reflected the strong bonds within the fire service.
Photos from the event capture key moments, including Chief Keith MacIsaac leading the ceremonies, the ribbon-cutting by Esther Koeppen and President Abruscato, and a touching moment with a young child wearing a fire helmet. These images highlight the pride and unity felt by all involved in this significant milestone for the Wheeling Fire Department.
