Barrington brush fire

Throughout the north and northwest suburbs, over the past week or so, the sky has been filled with random smoke plumes, mostly due to widespread prescribed prairie burns. These controlled fires are usually managed carefully, but occasionally, they escape or are not properly authorized, requiring a fire department response. On Tuesday, while driving through the northwest suburbs, Larry Shapiro followed one such plume to a prairie fire that was uncontrolled and unsupervised. A large field in the area was already burning when the first Barrington Fire Department units arrived. The dense smoke had begun to clear, revealing a fire that had spread along the middle of the field. Despite the intensity of the flames, the fuel load wasn’t enough to sustain the fire for long. This was evident from the relatively low flame heights, though the fire still posed a risk if wind conditions changed. Barrington units were called to a prairie fire behind homes on Old Dundee Road, west of Sutton (Route 59). As the crews made their way to the scene, they requested additional support due to the size of the fire. Upon arrival, they found a large portion of the field already burned, but with significant fuel remaining—enough to threaten at least one nearby home if the wind shifted. The response included Barrington’s new IHC/US Tanker, two engines, a quint, an ambulance, a battalion chief, and a brush unit. The fire was quickly contained within the grasslands and did not reach any residential areas. A brush truck arrived later and worked to douse any remaining hot spots and secure the perimeter. Photos from the scene show the scale of the fire and how close it came to the property line. While the fire was large, it was largely under control by the time emergency services arrived. The footage and images provide a clear view of the field and the proximity of the blaze to nearby homes. A small gallery of photos can be viewed here.
