Buffalo Grove Fire Chief Terry Vavra is stepping down after nearly seven years leading the village’s fire department, officials announced on Monday. With a career spanning 39 years in firefighting, Vavra joined Buffalo Grove in 2008 after serving for 28 years with the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District, where he retired as deputy chief.

During his time in Buffalo Grove, Vavra played a key role in negotiating labor agreements, introduced a new process for testing battalion chiefs, and served as chair of the Lake County Fire Chiefs Board for the past five years. He also contributed to the field by teaching firefighter safety courses and publishing articles in industry publications, according to a press release.

Deputy Fire Chief Michael Baker will take over as interim chief while the village searches for Vavra’s permanent replacement. Vavra’s final day at the department is scheduled for this Friday.

Buffalo Grove is saying goodbye to its fire chief. Terrance “Terry” Vavra will be retiring on February 13, marking the end of an era for the department.

Vavra made the announcement on February 9, explaining that the decision was difficult but necessary. “I need to go in a different direction,” he said. After spending 28 years as a firefighter in the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District and retiring as deputy chief, he took on the role in Buffalo Grove in March 2008—what he called his “retirement job.”

“They say the lifespan of a chief is about seven years,” Vavra joked. “And I think it’s time for me to move on.” When asked what he’ll do next, he laughed, “I’m told I have a wife who I haven’t seen much of in the last seven years, and I want to spend more time with my granddaughter.”

Despite stepping down, Vavra isn’t done with the fire service. He hinted that more traveling and teaching might be in his future. Meanwhile, the village is already preparing for the transition. Village Manager Dane Bragg, who has been reshaping leadership since 2010, is finalizing the team of department heads. He has brought in new leaders for the police and public works departments, hired a new deputy village manager, and created a new community development director position last year.
